Greenhouse gas Portal updated

The greenhouse gas Portal has been updated for 2026.

Updates

  • MUSICO was added (recently launched hyperspectral instrument on the Chinese space station);
  • PLATINO-HYPER (IRIDE) was added (similar to PRISMA capabilities);
  • GF-5 was moved from area mapper to facility scale;
  • New timelines and graphics are available.

Greenhouse gas satellite missions Portal

This Portal provides a comprehensive and regularly updated overview of current and planned satellite missions capable of measuring greenhouse gases (GHG). It includes missions operated by public agencies, commercial organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), offering a unique global view of the evolving GHG observation landscape.

Built on data from the CEOS Mission, Instruments and Measurements (MIM) Database, the Portal supports the assessment and planning of long-term GHG measurement capabilities. Users can explore mission and instrument information through interactive visualisations, measurement timelines and downloadable tables, helping to identify observation gaps and opportunities for future coordination. The CEOS Database Team maintains the Portal to ensure the information remains accurate, comprehensive and up to date.

Satellite missions are grouped into three categories according to their objectives and measurement capabilities, enabling users to quickly identify relevant missions for their needs.

Supporting global climate action

Reliable and transparent GHG data are essential for tracking emissions, informing climate policy and supporting international reporting obligations. As countries work to meet their commitments under the Paris Agreement, the demand for high-quality emissions information continues to grow.

Earth observation satellites are playing an increasingly important role in this effort. Advances in satellite technology now enable the measurement of GHG concentrations and emissions with the precision, accuracy, spatial resolution and global coverage required to support decision-making at local, national and international levels. These observations can contribute to national GHG inventories, independent emissions assessments and global stocktake processes aimed at evaluating collective progress towards climate goals.

The Portal supports international coordination and planning by helping users identify available and future data sources, while providing a common reference point for space agencies and data providers working to ensure the long-term continuity of these critical measurements. It also complements broader activities supporting the CEOS Global Stocktake Portal and long-term climate data records.

GHG Constellation Builder

The GHG Constellation Builder is designed to help users identify a combination of satellite missions that best meets their observation requirements. After downloading the spreadsheet, use the filters to create customised satellite constellations tailored to specific measurement objectives and geographic needs.

CEOS-CGMS GHG Roadmap

This Portal is a key component of the Greenhouse Gas Roadmap being implemented by CEOS and CGMS agencies, supporting international efforts to strengthen the use of satellite observations for GHG monitoring and climate action.
