It will be a hybrid meeting with two full days on 11-12 June  2025, and a half day on 13 June for additional plenary, actions and outcomes.

The International Earth Surface Working Group (IESWG) reports to Working Group II of the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS), and was established to monitor and document user requirements for Earth Observations (EO) used to characterize the surface and the subsequent surface-atmosphere interaction in numerical models.  The IESWG seeks to facilitate and guide continuity of measurements to advance science; coordinate reference data sets that can be shared for intercomparison studies; communicate methods and data across agencies to achieve common objectives; promote the science and goals for earth observation and modeling; and foster and explore new areas for research.

The IESWG plenary sessions will be focused on:

  • Status of relevant EO in operational atmospheric, land, and hydrological systems, including EO that are currently being used and are planned for future use, and identifying important gaps in the observation record
  • Recent advances and remaining challenges in using EO in operational  systems

 

Variables of particular focus include, but are not limited to:

  • Snow, ice, and cryosphere-atmosphere interactions
  • Vegetation and land-atmosphere fluxes
  • Soil moisture, river-discharge, and water cycle
